【High King Avalokitesvara Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】
High King Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva wears a Seven-buddha crown and has the appearance of a buddha. Her face is as round as the full moon. Her right hand forms the Dharma Discourse Mudra. Her left hand forms the Mudra of Equality. She wears a multi-layered celestial dress inscribed with the Seven-buddha Mantra. She is adorned with necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and anklets and there is a gold Sanskrit syllable on her back. She stands on a rainbow-colored lotus and her entire body emits brilliant light that radiates throughout all the worlds of the ten directions and three times.
High King Avalokitesvara wears a Seven-buddha crown. She is the Dharma Prince of the Seven Buddhas.
The Seven Buddhas of the past are Vipasyin, Sikhin, Visvabhu, Krakucchanda, Kanakamuni, Kasyapa, and Sakyamuni.
The most revered scriptures of the True Buddha School are the True Buddha Sutra and the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra. Living Buddha Lian-shengSheng-yen Lu has a truly profound affinity with High King Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. In the past, at Jade Emperor Palace, Abbot Shi Huiling presented a copy of the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra (High King Sutra) to Grand Master Lu. Since then, Grand Master Lu has recited this sutra daily.
The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra is a ''dream'' sutra, meaning that this sutra was transmitted in a dream. The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra was already extremely widespread and popular during the Wei, Jin and North-South Dynasties and remained popular throughout the Tang and Song Dynasties. Large numbers of people memorized this sutra and received tremendous spiritual responses from reciting it. The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra has a long history. It was eventually transmitted to Korea and Japan. The Japanese version of the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra can be found in Japan's 88 temples.
The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra was extremely popular during the Tang Dynasty. In the Xixia Dynasty, everyone recited the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra, and so did the people of Tang Dynasty after the sutra was transmitted to them. In the history of China, the Tang Dynasty is considered the most prosperous and glorious dynasty. This flourishing was due to the presence of High King Guanyin Bodhisattva.
Buddhism was transmitted from India to Tibet, China, Korea, and finally to Japan. From the fact that the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra was transmitted to Japan, we can see that this sutra has existed in Buddhist countries for a very long time. The High King Sutra is entirely comprised of the names of buddhas and bodhisattvas. The billions of Clear Cool Treasure Mountain Bodhisattvas are the billions of bodhisattvas in Mount Wutai. The buddhas of six directions, the ten billion Vajra Treasury Buddhas and the Prabhutaratna Buddha are also named in the sutra. The complete version of the High King Sutra includes invocation of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas: Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Ksitigarbha, Maitreya, Akasagarbha, Vajrapani, and Sarvanivarana-Viskambhin. The Seven Buddhas Mantra to Extinguish Transgressions is also contained in this sutra.
The sutra states that ''Upon reciting this sutra 1,000 times, all one's heaviest transgressions will be eliminated. One will be liberated from the suffering of birth and death and freed from all poisonous physical and mental harm.'' In other words, pain of life and death will be totally extinguished, liberating one from all suffering in one's lifetime. Everything that is harmful and poisonous will be eradicated. During his lifetime, Living Buddha Lian-sheng has received constant protection from the High King Avalokitesvara.
What is the significance of the High King Sutra? The first buddha named in the High King Sutra is Pure Light Secret Buddha, namely the Adibuddha. The full name of Pure Light Secret Buddha should be Pure Light Padmakumara Secret Buddha. The Pure Light Secret Buddha is actually none other than Padmakumara.
If one seeks to have a high score on a test, have a child, increase wealth, be loved and respected, purify the heaviest transgressions, eradicate illness due to karma, be reborn in the pure land, or anything else, High King Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva always answers one's prayers. Avalokitesvaras from the ten directions and all other bodhisattvas will come to help you because there is a verse in the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra which states, ''Avalokitesvaras from the ten directions and all bodhisattvas vow to save sentient beings and one will be liberated when calling upon them (all of one's bad karma will be purified and eliminated).''
As it is easy to receive spiritual response from High King Avalokitesvara, many people recite her sutra. By chanting the sutra 1,000 times one's heaviest transgressions will be eliminated. We modified the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra by making two changes. How was it modified? The Dedication of Merit verse was originally ''bao-fu-bu-xin-zhe zhuan-gong-shou-chi-jing'' which means ''Although lacking good fortune and faith, one who wholeheartedly recites this sutra will still receive response equally.'' We modified this verse as follows ''you-fu-jian-xin-zhe zhuan-gong-shou-chi-jing'' (or in another version ''hou-fu-jian-xin-zhe''). The modified version means ''one with good fortune or firm belief in the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra will recite this sutra.''
The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra was once revealed by a great tathagata, who told a convicted criminal about the sutra. After hearing about this sutra from the tathagata, the prisoner chanted it and received amazing spiritual response. As a result, the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra became widespread. It has been acknowledged as a genuine sutra which means it is an authentic transmission of the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three times.
When Living Buddha Lian-shengSheng-yen Lu became enlightened and turned the dharma wheel for the first time, he realized that the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra has infinite, boundless, and incredible merit. This sutra was manifested by Guru Padmasambhava as an expedient means to deliver all sentient beings. It completely fulfills dharma marks and universally saves all sentient beings. It enables a perfect understanding of Sutrayana and Vajrayana teachings and it allows sentient beings to obtain great wisdom and achieve the indestructible vajra body. In addition to reciting the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra, if a practitioner also chants 108 recitations of the Six Syllable Mantra ''om。ma-ni。pad-me。hum。'' and performs the Four-Armed Avalokiteshvara visualization practice, then 36 celestial deities will protect the practitioner day and night. All the ghosts and gods will respectfully obey the practitioner's orders. The merit of reciting this sutra is truly infinite.
The first scripture that I (Living Buddha Lian-shengSheng-yen Lu) received at the Jade Emperor Temple was the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra.
The first scripture that I memorized completely was the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra.
The first scripture from which I received spiritual response was the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra.
The first scripture that I widely transmitted was the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra.
I therefore state, ''The True Buddha School reveres the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra.''
I believe in the words written in this sutra: ''One is liberated from the suffering of birth and death and freed from all poisonous physical and mental harm.'' I therefore recited this sutra over a long period of time, and did indeed receive spiritual response.
The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra has the purest dharma benefit.
The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra is the most highly revered pure land of the buddha.
The High King Avalokitesvara Sutra is the highest dharma banner.
All disciples of the True Buddha School revere the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra. Disciples should complete 1,000 recitations of this sutra, and continue to chant it throughout their lifetime. By reciting this sutra, one will transform into a pure land which is merged with oneself. One must treasure this sutra in one's heart forever.
According to historical records, During the Xixia Dynasty, everyone recited the High King Sutra. At that time, the words ''Great White High Country'' were engraved on the royal seal of the Xixia Dynasty. Emperors Jing Zhong, Ren Zhong and Mo Di of the Xixia Dynasty (Great White High Country) were all past reincarnations of Living Buddha Lian-shengSheng-yen Lu.
Mr. Ding Fubao (editor of the Dictionary of Buddhist Studies) was a great master of Buddhism. He considered the High King Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva to be the highest, the most superior, and supreme, like a king. Since there is no one higher than a king, this sutra is called the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra. This explanation was noted by Mr. Ding Fubao. Actually, Great White High Country was the High King Avalokitesvara Country created by the White Padmakumara.
I urge everyone to recite the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra not just 1000 times but the more the better, because, by chanting the sutra, one creates an affinity with buddhas, bodhisattvas, and mahasattvas of the ten directions and three times. Consequently, one will attain enlightenment in the future.
In addition to reciting the Seven Buddhas Mantra to Extinguish Transgressions, one must also invoke the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. It is of utmost important to invoke the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, therefore one must include this invocation.
