【Hayagriva Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】
Red Hayagriva has one face and two arms. He has three wide-open eyes and protruding fangs. His appearance is terrifying. His hair and beard are yellowish-red in color and standing straight up. He wears a horse head ornament atop his head. His right hand holds a staff with a skull on top. His left hand holds a lasso with a hook on it. His right leg is bent inward while his left leg extends outward. He stands powerfully on a sun disc atop a lotus throne in the midst of the flames of a raging fire of prajna.
【Living Buddha Lian-shengSheng-yen Lu Dharma Talk - Hayagriva Cultivation Merits and Key Formula】
Hayagriva is one of the Eight Great Vidyarajas. Being an emanation of Guanyin Bodhisattva, Hayagriva is known as Horse Head Guanyin. As Guanyin's Wheel of Injunction, his power is infinite. Therefore, Hayagriva's origin is Amitabha. Hayagriva is also referred to as Swift Vajra, Quick Vajra, and Biting Vajra.
The two most important merits of cultivating Hayagriva are:
Saving beings in the animal realm.
Protection from all evil spells and black magic.
According to scripture, Hayagriva holds an authority staff in one hand. On the head of the staff is a skull. His other hand either forms the Wrathful Mudra or holds a lasso. The main color of Hayagriva is red although he may be depicted as black with some blue to represent subjugation. Hayagriva is the wrathful form of Guanyin. Although he saves sentient beings in all six realms, he most emphasizes the animal realm because he is a horse.
Hayagriva's most important dharma implement is not his authoritative skeleton staff or his lasso but rather the horse teeth atop his crown. The dharma power of Hayagriva is swift because the ''horsepower'' of Hayagriva enables him to run the fastest. His famed horse head comes from his horse strength and swift movement. Hayagriva can shatter the power of evil spells and witchcraft everywhere. His dharma power extends over all five continents and his might is supreme and unlimited.
First, Hayagriva is above all swift. His dharma power is speed. Second, the bite of Hayagriva is tremendously powerful. He is able to accomplish all dharma techniques by using his teeth, for example, eradication of illness.
When cultivating the Hayagriva Practice while sick, one should visualize Hayagriva's horse teeth biting at the sick part of one's body. One does not, of course, really bite oneself. That would be painful. Just visualize the biting. Suppose a sick person comes before you. It depends on where the sickness is. For example, if the person has a heart ailment, then one visualizes the person's heart. The technique one uses to eliminate the sickness is to bite away the person's sickness. One can cultivate this practice to bite away one's own illness and also to bite away the illness of others. This dharma can eradicate disasters and calamities.
To cultivate Wisdom Enhancement Practice, one visualizes Hayagriva flying out and returning with hundreds of sutras in his teeth. This is how one can increase one's wisdom.
Love, Respect, and Perfection Practice is for securing the love of a woman or man. To cultivate the Hayagriva Practice, one visualizes Hayagriva flying out and bringing the love interest of a man or woman back in his teeth. Don't bite the person to death. Bite gently. The person is held gently and brought to one's side. This is Love and Respect Dharma.
In Subjugation Dharma, Hayagriva is dispatched, and in the manner of chewing on hay, Hayagriva chews one's enemy until he is bitten to death. Of course, this is not a good thing and one will have to deliver the dead person to the pure land. This is the so-called Killing Deliverance Dharma of Hayagriva which Grandmaster has previously discussed. Holding softly and gently in the teeth represents friendly practices. Subjugation practice is represented by forceful biting.
Hayagriva is almost always the dharma protector of those who practice Guanyin as their personal deity. When someone asks me, ''If my principal deity is Guanyin, what dharma protector I should practice?'' my answer is usually ''Hayagriva.'' This is because Hayagriva is the wrathful manifestation of Guanyin. They are connected. The dharma protector of those who cultivate Guanyin as their personal deity is therefore always Hayagriva.
To cultivate Hayagriva Practice, one first visualizes empty space. One then visualizes the seed syllable ''seh'' appearing in a cloudless sky. A moon disc arises from a peaceful ocean. Within the moon disc is a seed syllable which transforms into the principal deity. This is the usual visualization. However, it doesn't need to be this complicated. One may directly visualize the seed syllable ''seh'' appearing in the sky atop a red lotus. The seed syllable then transforms into Hayagriva.
One can also visualize a ''seh'' syllable within one's heart emitting light to invoke Hayagriva from the void. One may also visualize a ''seh'' syllable appearing in empty space and transforming into Hayagriva.
To form the Hayagriva Mudra, first make a fist with each hand while forming a circle with the thumbs and forefingers. Extend the remaining fingers of the right hand upward, then slightly press the left fist with the right hand.
Hayagriva's seed syllable is ''seh.'' This is also the seed syllable of Amitabha. Hayagriva's mantra is: ''Om。seh。be- ma-da-ji。ha-ye-ji-wa。seh。hum-pei。'' The mantra, image, seed syllable, and mudra constitute the complete Hayagriva Sadhana.
Living Buddha Lian-shengSheng-yen Lu has already transmitted numerous karma practices of the Hayagriva Practice. There is Poison Neutralization Practice, Witch and Evil Spell Repelling Practice, Love and Respect Practice, and Vajra Scepter of Hayagriva Practice. By practicing Vajra Scepter of Hayagriva, one can protect oneself from all kinds of witchcraft and evil spells and one will not encounter disasters or calamities. By cultivating Firm Body Practice, ghosts and spirits will never be able to steal one's qi or light drops. Cultivating Hayagriva Practice enables one to be healthy, safe, and auspicious.
After attainment of spiritual union with Hayagriva, one can pray to Hayagriva to be one's protector forever. From the point of forming an alliance with Hayagriva on, if one makes offerings to him and keeps him in mind three times daily without fail, Hayagriva will respond to one's requests at all times.
The Hayagriva Mudra represents his two teeth. If one places some horse teeth inside Hayagriva's statue as a ''symbolic viscus,'' the supreme power of Hayagriva will be infinitely magnified.
